Dutch supreme court accepted mercy killing for demented parsons.
Reuters: Dutch Supreme Court expands euthanasia laws for dementia patients
In this case, the doctor carried out euthanasia on a person who had severe dementia. The person is supposed to have committed a living will of welcoming mercy killing when seriously demented. However, the prosecutor accused the doctor on murder.
The court declared that a doctor can carry out an written request for euthanasia even if he is now not able to express his own will.
This verdict seems rational. If a living will is no more validated when you get demented, people can no longer decide their life after losing their competence.
I believe not a few people do not want to survive their life without their definite will. On the other hand, it is acceptable that a person want to live longer as much as possible even if depending on others. It is an issue of philosophy of life.
Therefore, leaving a living will with a entirely legal way is very important. It is horrible that a doctor who carried out euthanasia with adhering to the patient and his family's will is accused on a murder.
