Behavior modification as a solution for COVID-19

In recent, we often hear the term "behavior modification" in the context of COVID-19. Shinzo Abe, The Prime Minister of Japan mentioned this words repeatedly in the declaration of emergency.

Behavior modification is originally a technical term of behavioral science. Our behavioral trait is formed by several factors such as biological characteristics, personality, environment in nurture, and experiences. These traits are deemed as a personality itself. For instance, reckless people often act a risky behavior.

But this behavioral tendency can be altered with some simple interventions, according to latest research. If we get rewards after a particular act, the act will be done more often. How to increase the rate of beneficial behaviors with eliminating harmful behaviors is crucially wanted answer from behavioral scientists. Thus, behavior modification is a core issue.

After corona shock, we have to keep social distance from neighbors. We should avoid crowded spaces. These acts are perhaps coerced by the government. But in Japan, there is no legislation to restrict citizen's activity directly. Therefore, the government expects citizens to modify their behaviors.

As a psychiatrist, behavior science is one of my specialty. I am glad to see the concept of behavior modification is spread to the society, though never welcoming the disaster of COVID-19.
